Language lessons for undocumented migrants

Extract from Récit de Kenji • 30 years old • Man • Japanese

The residence permit application receipt also enabled me, finally, to sign job contracts in France. Until then I had worked in the kitchens of Japanese restaurants. I had also visited a number of language schools, but because I was undocumented and wasn’t signed on at Pôle Emploi (Job Centre), often they refused to enrol me. There were schools on the Cours Julien and on the Rue d’Aubagne, but they only catered to women… so there were no places open for me. In the Panier, the problem was my lack of documents; without them you just couldn’t enrol. In the end, I followed classes at Casa Consolat where no such requirements existed.
