Renting: the problem of having guarantors who live abroad

Extract from Récit de Marcello • 35 years old • Man • Italian

Getting guarantors was the single biggest obstacle to renting accommodation. My family live in Italy and French landlords distrust guarantors who live abroad. I think they believe that if there are any problems it will be harder to retrieve any money they are owed. My sister works for the European Union in Brussels… she couldn’t be a guarantor either, but she had a French colleague who had kept a home in France and was willing to give her name as my guarantor.
