A German visa is useless in France

Extract from Récit de Kenji • 30 years old • Man • Japanese

In 2014, I began thinking of coming to settle in Marseille. I am Japanese and I still had the German visa and I thought it allowed me to stay here. In fact, I later learned that I could come to France but only for three months. At first, I didn’t have any problems, but little by little I began to have some: to find a place to live, to open a bank account, even to get a mobile phone… They wouldn’t accept my passport or my German visa. They asked for my French residence permit. I was also asked for it for odd jobs I found, even though I had already worked in other European countries with my German visa (Portugal, Belgium…).
